This router was purchased to provide fail over in a school SOHO implementation as well as VPN connectivity with the remote office. Failover: The router has performed flawless in managing both a DSL and USB modem, in which the DSL connection experiences a number of problems. The default settings worked well at managing fail over and fail back, with tweaking to the settings the fail over is smooth with little downtime. The only downtime in fact, is a few seconds as the router verifies a true outages and brings the modem online. USB Data Usage: Though generic in nature it tracks usage well and provides sufficient controls to prevent overages. Load Balancing: Though not a feature we are currently using, it was tested. The default settings need some adjustments to make this feature work properly, but once adjusted properly worked as advertised eliminating a single ISP as the choke point. VPN: Configuration of the VPN was straightforward making connectivity more streamlined than multiple client-to-site connections and throughput was good. A word though, the wizard will default to an easier, albeit less security VPN method. This is easily resolved by unchecking a couple boxes. Wireless Performance: We have approximately 32 hosts total, half of which are wireless. We have not experienced drop outs and overall throughput has been good. If there is a weakness though, it would be the wireless as it does not have the same throughput as other radios. (Everything has some room for improvement. ) 🙂 Ethernet/LAN: These work as advertised handling large file transfers with easy. DHCP works well and managing reservations is a snap. Overall: I would certainly recommend this device to anyone needing a more services than your standard consumer router. It has proved time and again that it is up to a small office/home office, even with average wireless performance. Purchase if you get a Virgin or other u s b internet service provider! Can effectively browse and stream.,Read more One person found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseBE Zimmerman5.0 out of 5 starsBetter option than MiFi – be careful with batteriesApril 7, 2012Verified PurchaseUpdate: Some reviewers have claimed success working with 5v batteries. I have a 5-19v battery capable of delivering up to 4 amps or 76w (that’s a lot) that hooks up to just about anything. Using the 5v battery another buyer had would only be capable of 0.3w. This thing’s charger implies a 18w load. When I tried it with 5v there just wasn’t enough juice to power the router and the USB air card. You decide. Don’t bother buying the USB-5.5mm barrel connector cable for power. Normal USB power (5w) is probably just too lightweight for both. A 12v car adapter is a good alternative if you’re planning on using it in the car.Original Review: Like other reviewers, I found this product to be well made, reliable and worth the money. I like the fact that you are not tied to a particular carrier (works with most USB air cards). I have a 4G LTE Verizon air card and it sure seems faster going through this device than direcly plugged into the computer. Newbies need to understand this is just a router/hotspot and does not have a way to connect to the internet by itself without connecting a USB air card (modem) or ethernet cable – can be connected to a DSL/Cable modem. My wife’s non-3G/4G iPad is now able to connect to the internet without a fixed WiFi signal (in the car, by the pool, etc.).This is really a full featured 802.11n router/hot spot in a tiny case. Allows 16 simultaneous users on both SSID’s (Main and Guest). Has very good security and is very easy to set up. The range performance was not great, but not bad either – probably because it has only 1 antenna – n routers usually have multiple antennae. In my particular application I really don’t want coverage that’s too wide, so I’m happy with it. One thing that some road warriors might find neat is the ‘WiFi as WAN’ feature. Using advanced setup, you can configure this router to get its WAN signal from a free (or not) Wi-Fi source – coffee shop, hotel room, wherever – foregoing the need to use minutes on your USB air card. Once set up, you can connect to the internet via the built in ethernet port and/or have multiple devices access it via WiFi. Not very secure way to go, but very nice. One Con is that it’s not battery operated and draws a fair amount of current at 12vDC. Another reviewer uploaded a picture of their CTR35 connected to a Duracell Rechargeable LiIon external USB battery with a third party USB-barrel connector cable. That battery is 5vDC and capable of providing only 0.6A. The CTR35 is a 12v device (needs to power itself AND the air card, which is a 5v USB device). The output spec for AC adapter supplied with the unit clearly shows its output at 12v@1.5A. Using an underpowered battery like the one recommended by the other reviewer will very likely cause unreliable operations, if it even works at all. 12v external batteries are available, but a lot more expensive (~75-125 US) and not from CradlePoint. I contacted CradlePoint to see if they were doing something special with voltage regulation – they do not, and confirmed this was a very bad idea and that operating the unit with lower than spec power supplies (like a battery) would void the warranty… Some portable DVD players use 12v batteries so that’s another option if you can find the right adapter tip. To be on the safe side I’m looking for at least a 9.6v battery for mine. Big price difference between 9.6v and 12v for some reason.Made in Taiwan. Customer Service is in Idaho. Wow – refreshing.I’ve already recommended this to friends.Read more 3 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseA. Swarvar4.0 out of 5 starsWorks as advertised, wish it had a few more featuresDecember 4, 2012Verified PurchaseI’ve used the CTR35 a few times since I got it in mid November and so far I like it. I’ve had a few instance in which it didn’t recognize my LG AD600 (AT&T) USB modem for some reason. I had to disconnect power and let it sit for a bit and power it back on before it would recognize the AD600 but other than that it seems to be pretty reliable. I was questioning if I was getting the full bandwidth the AD600 provided me when plugged directly into my laptop though because I was seeing VERY poor speeds when running speed tests on my iPad 3 but I was able to browse the web just fine. My laptop actually reported speeds that I would have normally expected (6MB down, ~1MB up), so I’ll chalk it up to a wonky speed test app on the iPad I guess.I do wish it had a few more features included, like a PPTP VPN server. I bought a Asus RT-N66U (full blown router) for the ability to use my AD600 as a modem and have a PPTP VPN server, but it never recognizes my AD600 properly. I bought the CRT35 to hopefully forward the proper port to the Asus router to provide that functionality when I’m traveling. I haven’t had a chance to test it, but I did try to do some port forwarding for another use and it didn’t seem to work…at all. I even set a specific IP as a DMZ and still didn’t have any luck getting the proper connection I wanted. Perhaps using static IP’s, setting DMZ, and rebooting the unit would have solved my problem. Regardless, it wasn’t as easy to get working as other ‘regular’ routers.Overall I’m happy with the unit. I travel a lot, and it’s nice to be able to have more devices than JUST my laptop (usually have my WiFi only iPad with me) on fast WiFi wherever I go. Also sometimes where I am working I can’t get good cellular signal, but across the room by a window I can. This solves that problem by allowing me to place the CTR35 where signal is best and serve up the data connection across the room via WiFi. If you travel a lot, this is a must-purchase IMO if you have a USB modem.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 119 reviewsWrite a customer review Customers who viewed this item also viewedPage 1 of 1 Start overPage 1 of 1 This shopping feature will continue to load items.
