However, the range is pretty weak or my house is too big, and I am pretty sure it’s not the latter. As a result, I researched a variety of solutions, none of which seemed too appealing to implement (bridges, wireless range extenders, new RF antenna, etc). It just all seemed too complicated, and I consider myself pretty tech savvy.Fortunately, I was reading through some tech reviews and stumbled upon the Netgear Wireless wall-plugged router kit. It seemed like it was pretty simple to setup and easy to use. Well, I can report that it is exactly that. There is no software to install at all. You simply plug in the ethernet cable from the cable modem in one room into the Netgear plug and then plug that into the wall. Check that all three green lights are lit and you are good to go.The next step is to take the second half of the Netgear plug into the desired room in the house and plug it into an electric socket. When its three lights are lit, you have a connection and are good to go in there. My laptop computer picked up wireless signal immediately and I was surfing the web in no time flat. Basically, it was flawless. So, WHY am I am only giving it four stars? Two reasons:First, the wireless range of the Netgear plug is pretty weak. It definitely doesn’t have the power of my main wireless modem. Then again, it doesn’t have an antenna AND it still works, so it’s no big deal; it’s just not perfect.Second, the Netgear plugs need to be plugged in somewhat near each other to function correctly and get the Homelink green light to turn green. When the Netgear plugs were plugged in on opposite ends of the house (what I was hoping for to maximize range), it did not achieve a homelink connection. However, when I moved the plugs to outlets that were closer together (but still outside my wireless routers range), it DID work. So, partial credit again here. While I cna’t explain why it did not work, perhaps the electrical homelink signal degrades the farther the outlets are apart.Anyway, everything is working pretty smoothly now and I am excited that I can get a signal in another area of the house that was not covered by internet previously.Read more 103 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseF. Col1.0 out of 5 starsWant to play russian roulette?July 27, 2005Verified PurchaseI bought this after reading Amazon user comments. Most of them say it is a snap. It must be. For some. After having to return the first unit for hardware failure after 1 day and a 30 min phone call to… New Delhi I had another one delivered. This one worked but it would not talk to my Netgear wireless router. It would take forever to find the network address and then it would either fail or establish a limited connection. I tried to update the firmware on my own which is not as well done as in the router. Then I decided to call India again. Sam, a very good, knowledgeable guy helped me (another 45 minutes of troubleshooting). He closed the case too, after updating the firmware and verifying that the stuff worked. We finished with him saying: ‘now you can move the Access point to any location and it will work’… No, it did not. And it is not because of my electrical system. The 2 adapters in fact talk to each other.I do not know what it is but what happens is that the connection with the extender is very difficult to obtain; it comes and goes; it is much more dependent on what wireless receiver is on the other hand. One computer works at times, another not at all… you know what I mean. All of this with one adapter upstairs, one downstairs in my very middle class (=small) home and trying to connect from feet away from the access point…For your reference: I use an up to date XP tablet edition OS and, as I said, a Netgear WGT624 router. I use WEP 128bit and MAC access discrimination. On this note, finally, I do not understand the comments of the reader who complains about low level security. As for the 624, the 102 allows setting of WEP 128 bits and MAC address discrimination.Product is heading back to Netgear. I will wait for something better and will continue to move or keep my arms up or knee down in order to get signal where I want it…My regards to the vast wireless community.Read more 6 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseJ. S. Ferrier4.0 out of 5 starsSolved my problemOctober 18, 2005Verified PurchaseWe live in an older house with those wonderful lath and plaster walls that are great on soundproofing and even better at stifling wireless signals. Our computer and router are upstairs and there was no appreciable signal downstairs. I saw an article in PC magazine on wireless range extenders and decided to give it a try.I first got the range extender kit, installing the range extender itself in the staircase which helped improve the signal significantly. But there were still areas downstairs that were dead. I then added another Netgear WGX102 range extender in the center of the house and the signal strength is now evenly distributed all over the house and even out to our deck by the pool. You should not expect the signal to be as good as a hardwire connection and in my opinion, the setup instructions provided by Netgear are confusing. Security is an issue and you should seriously consider investing in a good wireless security system like McAfee’s.But I am otherwise very pleased. For less than $200, I avoided a lot of holes in the wall to hardwire outlets downstairs. Wireless gives me the freedom I wanted.Read more 2 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 109 reviewsWrite a customer review What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?NETGEAR N300 WiFi Range Extender (EX2700)3.9 out of 5 stars31,009$26.08TP-Link AV600 Nano Powerline ethernet Adapter Starter Kit, Powerline speeds up to 600Mbps (TL-PA4010KIT)4.0 out of 5 stars5,267$37.99 Pages with related products.
