Setup was straightforward. I have set up other routers, and I found that the Netgear setup screens presented pretty much the same options that other manufacturers do. The router came with the latest firmware installed, so no update was needed.Assorted Notes:– There is no option to select between 803.11 b/g/n; presumably the router automatically broadcasts on all those bands.– Coverage in my house is a bit better than what I experienced with my old but very trusty Linksys wrt54g router (whose coverage was improved by the use of home-made antenna boosters, which I’m not currently using on the Netgear).– Initially I could not disable the 20/40 MHz compatibility option (the associated box could be unchecked, but the ‘Apply’ button had no effect). After several rounds of suggestions from Netgear Support (which, by the way, was very responsive), I discovered that the problem resulted from my Firefox browser; both Chrome and Internet Explorer were able to apply that change, but Firefox was not. This was quite odd, since I used Firefox to do all the other router configurations; moreover, it is unreasonable to require a customer to use multiple browsers in order to configure a router.– With 20/40 MHz Coexistence turned off, the router’s Wi-Fi connection to a laptop jumped from 72.2 Mbps to 150 Mbps (faster than the router’s wired connections, which max out at 100 Mbps). But my Comcast ‘Blast’ Internet service currently provides a WAN connection at 60 Mbps, so there didn’t seem to be any point in leaving the 20/40 MHz coexistence setting disabled (moreover, doing so could reportedly produce interference on other wi-fi networks in my neighborhood).– I was surprised to discover that, even with Remote Management turned off (per the factory default), it is still possible to login to this router from computers on my Wi-Fi network (I had erroneously assumed that a wired connection would be required). Netgear support confirms that this is normal behavior, but I would have preferred a setting (like the one that my old Linksys had) to prevent router logins through wireless devices.– The packaged product includes a quick-start guide, but no manual. The manual, which must be downloaded as a PDF file, was written in September, 2013, and apparently predates the latest version of this router (for example, the manual indicates that, in the router’s Wireless Network Settings, the highest ‘Mode’ is 300 Mbps, whereas my router has 450 Mbps as the highest option).– Contrary to what the (downloaded) manual indicates, the Wi-Fi LED on the router’s front blinks (irregularly) once the router is configured. I trust that this is normal behavior, as it has not been associated with any dropped Wi-Fi connections. What one wants from a router, besides performance, is long-term reliability. Mine has only been online for a couple of days, so it’s far too early to comment on that. I’ll provide a reliability report later on.UPDATE 12-27-2014: After running this router for a little more than a month, I have experienced no problems to date. It serves a couple of wired computers, two additional computers occasionally on wi-fi, three ROKU boxes, and a couple of phones that use our wi-fi network periodically. I haven’t seen any dropouts or glitches.UPDATE 08-15-2015: If you want to make use of IPv6, this router may not be the right choice. Mine will get an IPv6 address if I configure it for DHCP (but not via ‘Autoconfig’). However, it regularly loses the ability to pass that address IPv6 through to the connected computers. The only way I have discovered to fix this is to disable IPv6, and then re-enable it for DHCP. That lasts for a few days, after which the exercise must be repeated. Some notes on Netgear’s website appear to confirm this problem, but those notes pertain even to the latest firmware release.UPDATE 11-04-2015: Although a new firmware version has recently been released, the IPv6 issue has not been fixed. Netgear’s release notes state that ‘The IPv6 pass-through mode doesn’t work. The device doesn’t transfer IPv6 packets between LAN and WAN.’Read more 10 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseGamer2.0 out of 5 starsUnacceptable issues.November 22, 2014Verified PurchaseThis router needs a firmware update bad.Cons.1. Wireless Settings and Wireless AP (advanced tab) will not let me save my configuration under Internet Explorer 11 (win 7 64).2. Router will not let me connect to any online game.3. Turning NAT to open does not fix connection to games.4. Using DMZ does not fix connection to games.5. Wired speed tops off around 75 Mbps… Where as wireless tops out around 92 Mbps.6. Wireless range is bad with default settings and speed is slow.Pros.1. Router does not get warm at all.2. Wi-Fi feels snappy and fast (when configured).3. Range is acceptable when long preamble is used with 20MHz width.Conclusion.If your just looking to surf the web, watch some movies and do it at a cheap price… This router will meet your needs. But if your one to configure, game or use wired connection… Stay away.Read more 2 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abusem0sfet3.0 out of 5 starsREAD!!! Power supply problem!!!December 14, 2014Verified PurchaseWhen I first got this brand new out of package, the wireless connection worked fine. But the LAN ports would drop packets during an online game and eventually the server would kick me out. After trying a few things without improvement, I finally decided to switch out the power supply. I was actually surprised that a different power supply solved the LAN port problems. I then measured the voltage output of the power supply and see that the first power supply was a little bit lower than 12V. The second power supply (working one) was just above 12V. These small voltage variation should not affect a well designed router. It seems like there’s no voltage regulator in this router (or the regulator is bad). Just as a test, I switched back to using the first power supply and sure enough the problem came back.Anyway if you see any problems on a brand new router, you might want to check the voltage output of your power supply.Netgear should pay me to debug their hardware issues…Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseINTREPID5.0 out of 5 starsThe BEST router for around $50.00July 31, 2014Verified PurchaseIf you’re considering the Netgear RangeMax WNR1000 on Amazon for about $25 – don’t bother. It may be tempting, but for only $25 more this WNR2500 is a far superior router with greater range and more consistent connections. It’s extremely easy to setup and works flawlessly. You can read a detailed technical review at smallnetbuilder.com. This WNR2500 is the best Netgear router for about $50 offered on Amazon. If you can spend more, I recommend the highly rated dual band ASUS RT-N66U Router for about $120. But that’s $70 more. If you don’t want to spend that kind of money and want a solid router, get this one. By the way, external antennas do make a difference. Internal antennas are generally a form over function compromise. A router is not a fashion statement. An advanced feature I liked was the Access Point Mode. If you need to connect a router to a router, this valuable feature will prevent double NAT. Google ‘double Nat’ if you plan to connect a router to a router (or a router to a modem/router combo). It also has a repeater mode as well.Read more 10 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseJohn Hobbs III2.0 out of 5 starsThis would be good as an access point for people playing clash of …February 9, 2018Verified PurchaseArrived damaged and doesn’t appear to have the ability to pass data anywhere close to gigabit speeds. When I tested the wired connection I was only passing 60 megs and when I removed the switch I went to 160.This would be good as an access point for people playing clash of clans or something but passing large bits of data isn’t advised.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseChris Childers2.0 out of 5 starsStops working and has to be unplugged frequently.September 2, 2016Verified PurchaseFrequently ‘hangs up’ and has to be power cycled to continue working properly. I lost internet connection 3 times one day and had to unplug and plug this device back in to get it to work. Other PCs with a hard connection to the same internet source did not have this issue so I know it was this wireless router causing the issue. The issue resolved after power cycling this device. It has been very unreliable and frustrating. I do not recommend this product.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 141 reviewsWrite a customer review Pages with related products.
